Day 3 Hellbilly (2003)

Another Prime find. Micro budget. Shorter than I expected, less than an hour, I probably should have paid more attention to that when I selected it. As it is advertised as Massimiliano Cerchi’s lost work, perhaps it was an unfinished project that someone found and released without trying to finish or polish it, but that’s just speculation and conjecture.

I decided to kick off this year’s challenge with this film, inspired by Poe’s classic story and brought to life by the estimable talents of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.  Though this version does not hold up very well, it does have some fine and haunting scenes.  Especially when held up to the outstanding interpretation years later which Karloff did with Vincent Price.    Still, these classic films are always worth watching.  It’s like a domino effect, you watch one, then you need to find another from the same period, and pretty soon you’ve immersed yourself in every Poe inspired film or film starring Lugosi and Karloff made in the 1930’s.  A worthwhile way to spend time during our favorite horror themed month, indeed.
