Movie #1 of the 2022 31-days of horror.

This sequel was released 8 years after the first Wyrmwood. Where the first was a horror comedy that introduced its audience to some memorable characters and a creative new twist on the zombie genre, this one dropped most, if not all, of the comedy. It, instead, focused on how the survivors and the zombies had adapted and evolved post apocalypse.

This German, silent-era film is based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s classic tale.  A wager is made between the demon, Mephisto, and an Archangel for the fate of mankind.  Should Mephisto be able to corrupt the soul of the the alchemist, Faust, evil shall rule the Earth.   The story, though a tale of good vs evil, really explores doing the wrong things for the right reasons.   I fully appreciate the story for what it was at the time it was written, and then later filmed, it really shows how far we have grown in our societal mores.

Visually, the film is haunting, and with the score, it’s almost hypnotic.  The first 30 minutes passed and I barely blinked, it was so beautiful.  The special effects are fantastic and hold up wonderfully.   This film had the highest budget for its time, and it shows.

Although it drags in some areas,  I was not expecting a nearly 2-hour epic when I chose this, but was pleasantly surprised.
