In every generation, there is a chosen one… no, wait, that’s the TV series.
Stereotypically blonde, vapid cheerleader, Buffy, discovers that she is “the chosen one” destined to save the world from vampires.
I’ve always enjoyed this film, even if Joss Whedon didn’t. Donald Southerland as Merrick, the Watcher, was unfortunate. He did put his own twist on the character. Sadly, it didn’t really work and it made Merrick’s claim that he had been alive for generations training slayers not too believable. I (and pretty much everyone else) LOVED Paul Rubens, as Amilyn, the master vampire, Lothos’ minion. He, too, put his own spin on the character, which did work with the story. Rutger Hauer, as Lothos, was outstanding. He easily swayed between sinister and silly as the scene needed. Kristy Swanson did an admirable job as bubble-headed Buffy. And Luke Perry, as Pike, was a far better match for Buffy than Xander.
So, Whedon retconned this film from cannon. It stays part of my collection because it’s a good film.
