I decided to kick off this year’s challenge with this film, inspired by Poe’s classic story and brought to life by the estimable talents of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Though this version does not hold up very well, it does have some fine and haunting scenes. Especially when held up to the outstanding interpretation years later which Karloff did with Vincent Price. Still, these classic films are always worth watching. It’s like a domino effect, you watch one, then you need to find another from the same period, and pretty soon you’ve immersed yourself in every Poe inspired film or film starring Lugosi and Karloff made in the 1930’s. A worthwhile way to spend time during our favorite horror themed month, indeed.

Otto, an employee of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc., is called into his supervisor, Turner’s office one morning to find one of his co-workers, Mike, sitting in a chair, a stake through his chest. Turner states that he killed Mike because he was a vampire. Obviously, Otto is disturbed by this, as Berm-Tech is owned and operated by vampires, or as they prefer to be called, Netherfolk, and Turner himself is one. Turner, it seems, has contracted an illness which causes him senility, and he has forgotten that he is a Netherfolk. Cherry is on her way to Vegas, but her car breaks down just outside a small town and she must wait for parts to be ordered before it can be fixed. The town is so small there is no hotel for her to stay at, so she rents a room above a local butcher shop. After Ma died, Main Street Meats lost that something special that kept it going. Floyd thinks that having Cherry work the front counter, a pretty, fresh face, might draw in some customers.
