This German, silent-era film is based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s classic tale.  A wager is made between the demon, Mephisto, and an Archangel for the fate of mankind.  Should Mephisto be able to corrupt the soul of the the alchemist, Faust, evil shall rule the Earth.   The story, though a tale of good vs evil, really explores doing the wrong things for the right reasons.   I fully appreciate the story for what it was at the time it was written, and then later filmed, it really shows how far we have grown in our societal mores.

Visually, the film is haunting, and with the score, it’s almost hypnotic.  The first 30 minutes passed and I barely blinked, it was so beautiful.  The special effects are fantastic and hold up wonderfully.   This film had the highest budget for its time, and it shows.

Although it drags in some areas,  I was not expecting a nearly 2-hour epic when I chose this, but was pleasantly surprised.

Writer/director Adam Green offers the audience what is intended to be the next big name in the American slasher genre.  Though it may be the same slasher archetype, given a rich new setting and a face… redesign (can’t really call it a facelift now, can we), it also gives the audience some really wonderful over-the-top gore scenes, dismemberment, evisceration, buckets of blood splashed around, and fun, though stereotypical, characters. An indie, low budget, Art House Horror-Comedy. Yep. Worth the watch? Sure. I just wasn’t a fan of the random stylistic jumps. It seemed like Folger was experimenting with direction and photographic styles, in this, his directorial debut, and mashed them all together in one film. Neat, but all over the freaking place. The story rather suffered for this, as in some places the story was over explained, and in others it was overly metaphorical. On the plus side, the cast is very talented, and there is all sorts of great kill scenes with plenty of good effects.

Our heroes: Cole (the troubled leader), Kyle (pretty sure his special power is his foul language), Aaron (ninja extraordinaire), and Alex (with all new super mind powers), have continued the fight against evil.  Now, in the face of their greatest foes, they must team up with former villain, Eric, and his brother Randall (who, if you recall, was the magician in the first film that created our favorite Ninjas).  Together, they must battle the Old Ones, the original immortal monsters from which all others descended.
