When people start disappearing in a small town, it’s up to a game warden, his girlfriend, a doctor, and the sheriff to figure out what happened, while dealing with their own interpersonal drama.
This remake, although it has heart, is as mundane as its classic 1959 creature feature counterpart. There are a few updates, most notably that the giant leaches aren’t people in giant rubber suits.
The story followed the original to the point that I wondered for a while if they had even written a new script for the remake. They did. This is another of those films that would be easy to tear apart, but to focus on the positive, this was clearly a labor of love with the film makers wanting to emphasize what they likely believed were the good aspects of the original and update some of the antiquated bits.
It was okay and I’m glad I stumbled across this, I’d actually intended to revisit the original as kind of a respite from the Horror Fest I attended this weekend.
I would recommend this only for the curious who enjoyed the original, it’s very low-budget and it shows.
