This German, silent-era film is based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s classic tale. A wager is made between the demon, Mephisto, and an Archangel for the fate of mankind. Should Mephisto be able to corrupt the soul of the the alchemist, Faust, evil shall rule the Earth. The story, though a tale of good vs evil, really explores doing the wrong things for the right reasons. I fully appreciate the story for what it was at the time it was written, and then later filmed, it really shows how far we have grown in our societal mores.
Visually, the film is haunting, and with the score, it’s almost hypnotic. The first 30 minutes passed and I barely blinked, it was so beautiful. The special effects are fantastic and hold up wonderfully. This film had the highest budget for its time, and it shows.
Although it drags in some areas, I was not expecting a nearly 2-hour epic when I chose this, but was pleasantly surprised.

Near the small town of Sweet Water, near the Alabama Hills in the Mojave desert, a land developer, who is at odds with a local tribe, is overseeing excavation for a project when his workers stumble across a set of bones. Once disturbed these bones set free an ancient Native American evil which destroys everything in its path. It is up to Sheriff Steve Evans and Chief Storm Cloud to stop this creature.
