I’m exploring the lighter side of horror, “horror lite”, just one calorie of spookiness. Scooby Doo was definitely a gateway to scarier stuff for me when I was a kid growing up. Therefore, watching this with the grandbabies.

“Scooby Doo (2002)”

For more information follow this link.

After going their separate ways, Mystery, Inc. are unwillingly brought together on an island vacation resort by Mr. Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) and reunite to solve their greatest mystery yet.

First, Matthew Lillard is Shaggy. Seriously, Lillard is amazing. I’m not certain that even Rick Dees himself could have pulled off a live action Shaggy this well. Sarah Michelle Geller and Freddie Prinze, Jr. work well as Daphne and Fred not only because they’re talented, but more so because of their incredible chemistry and being a real-life couple. Linda Cardellini did a great job as the, sometimes annoyingly, intellectual Velma. Steven Grives is a convincing combination of sinister and comedic with his performance as N’ Goo Tuana.

Full of spooky sets, monsters, CGI animation, jokes targeted at adults that may or may not be missed by more worldly children, and the usual Scooby Doo hijinks, this is a fun one.

Oh, and the villain is… just wow. So annoying. And totally meant to be.

“Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)”

For more information follow this link.

Mystery, Inc. is back in Coolsville solving mysteries and gaining some level of celebrity, when a local television reporter (Alicia Silverstone) starts to put an negative spin on all their deeds, editing footage to make them look bad. Meanwhile, a cloaked figure is unleashing past monsters to attack Coolsville.

Even more great additions to the cast and cameos in this one. Pamela Anderson, Peter Boyle, and Seth Green as Velma’s crush, just to name a few. I thought that the idea of the story was pretty good, but the execution wasn’t all that good. Even the super fun disco dance scenes didn’t save it from just being an okay movie.

“Scooby Doo: The Live Action Era” Day 10 & 11 of the 2024 31-Days of Horror Okay, so, yeah, not so much horror, but still spooky.
