An Arizona rancher, Cole (Rory Calhoun), is struggling with an overpopulation of rabbits. He had some help dealing with coyote’s previously which “worked too well,” but now he is looking for a more environmentally sound solution which balances the natural order. Luckily, Professor Elgin Clark (DeForest Kelly), knows just who to ask for help. Gerry (Janet Leigh) and Roy (Stuart Whitman) Bennett are nearby working on learning more about insects, and agree to try to help out by using an experimental serum to disrupt the rabbit’s reproduction.

This crazy Danish short is an homage to the classic spaghetti westerns with a horror twist. About a boy, Virgil, who lives in a saloon with his jerk of a father and a bartender, who is constantly bullied by his father and a pair of tough guy cowboys. Nearby, the natives, tired of being terrorized by “The Dark Butcher,” and perform a ritual which raises the dead to exact vengeance on the Butcher. Kevin is invited to spend a weekend at his estranged, adopted, brother, Norm’s new place, for a birthday gathering with some of Norm’s unusual friends. It turns out that his brother’s place is a patch of desert where they’re camping out, and the weekend kicks off with Norm’s buddy and handyman, Jovan, choking to death on a hot dog. As the nearest hospital is “like 80 miles away,” the group decides just to bury him on Norm’s land, that may be sacred Native American burial ground.

31 Days of Horror 2016: Movie #3

A woman, Michelle, is in a car accident and wakes up chained to a wall and locked in a room, once unlocked she discovers that her captor, Howard, is also the one who saved her after her car accident. Her captor/savior (who, according to his friend, is a huge conspiracy theorist) and his friend/handyman, Emmett, explain that there has been some sort of bomb and that the air outside is now toxic. She still doesn’t trust him, but discovers for herself when a woman, whose skin appears to be melting, arrives at the door demanding assistance. After a rough start, they find a level of comfort with each other in the shelter, until Michelle discovers a suspicious message, and realizes that sometimes first impressions are actually right.

Writer/director Adam Green offers the audience what is intended to be the next big name in the American slasher genre.  Though it may be the same slasher archetype, given a rich new setting and a face… redesign (can’t really call it a facelift now, can we), it also gives the audience some really wonderful over-the-top gore scenes, dismemberment, evisceration, buckets of blood splashed around, and fun, though stereotypical, characters.
